North Country Public Radio on rural homelessness

North Country Public Radio ran an excellent series on the homeless in northern New York. Homelessness in rural areas has a significantly different dynamic than homelessness in large cities.

The stories, available via Real Audio, can be heard by clicking here.

Thanks for the link to these stories... this sort of strikes a chord with me because my dad is one of these transient homeless (although not in the North Country, he's in Oswego County). He's finally started drawing his Social Security, so "life is good," but he has no address other than a post office box, he lives in his van (and it's not an RV!) or at campgrounds, or watches his friends' houses when they're away on vacation. And seems to enjoy himself quite well, but then again, he can't afford anything else, and he still has his health. He stays with his brother in Florida in the winter. The weird thing is, this sort of homelessness is not considered unusual or aberrant in the area where he hangs out. --NYCO
