As an ethical question, I was intrigued to read about this case in Peru about a young woman who is selling her virginity to pay her sick mother's medical bills. Her newspaper advertisement asked for the equivalent of about US$9500.
The advert has provoked a furor in the macho, heavily Catholic country. "This shows that there is a crisis of values in this country. She should get a job and not sell her body!" said one female parliamentarian who would do better to help address the country's economic crisis and cripplingly high unemployment.
Tellingly, the young woman told a Spanish paper, "I got thousands of emails, most using words I would not dare repeat. But nobody offered a solution for my family."
