Olympian shame
Isn't ironic that a regime that murders its own citizens among the countless other ways it wages war against its own people has decided to take extraordinary measures to protect fire...

Pretty hard to begin to even scratching the surface of the many ironies modern Olympics has become.
I've spent some time with the Uyghurs, pretty interesting people once you get to know them. Definitely not Han Chinese by any measure. Nor the Tibetans.
Those two fringe areas have always been a measure of the strength of the Chinese central government. Loss of those two regions would by symbolic of the decline of the current regime - or the deterioration of their "mantle of authority".
It has a lot to do with "face". Same goes with hosting the dreaded Olympics and the flame associated with that event. I'm pretty sure that the Chinese were not ready for this kind of event and the attention and PR required for such an effort.
Now with Hugo calling for the flame to go through Venezuela, you know, to support his Socialist Brethren from international meddling into their internal affairs, things will get even more ironic.
