20th CD report

There hasn't been much of substance to report on the race for the vacant 20th Congressional district seat, vacated by now Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. Mostly just the usual negative, personal attacks that have little relevance to anyone other than partisans. Planet Albany blog runs sympathetic toward Republican Jim Tedisco. Matt Funiciello endorses Libertarian Eric Sundwall and notes that the candidate will be making a public appearance on Wed. Feb. 11 in Glens Falls. I haven't read much in the blogosphere about Democrat Scott Murphy, whose disorganized campaign recalls clueless Democratic efforts of the pre-Gillibrand era. Gov. David Paterson still has not set a date for the special election.

How come you get to characterize me but it's not OK for me to characterize you?

You DID characterize me.

I never had a problem with the fact that you characterized my position. I took issue with how you did so.

I stated that your characterization mistakenly suggested that I had endorsed a candidate in the race. I wanted to explicitly clarify that I had not done so. Which is not to say I won't, only that I was and am at present undecided. When I said I did not know enough about Sundwall (which will change tonight as he will be in GF) take a position on him, I assumed you would've believed me.

I have stated that I am unimpressed by Murphy and it is fair to infer that I am not a fan of Tedisco. That is not to be taken as an endorsement of Sundwall. If I endorse him, I will say so explicitly.

What you interpreted as 'talking up' was me providing information about smaller party candidates that are almost completely ignored by the mainstream media. I do this because I believe the media should give a decent amount of coverage to all the candidates, not just anointed two. And that if they won't, then I will do my miniscule part in that area. This constitutes a service, not an endorsement (unless I state so explicitly). This has been the consistent position of this blog.

For example, last year, I provided information about all the smaller party and independent presidential candidates on the ballot in NYS, even though it was quite clear I only supported one of them.

(Another example of the public service aspect is that you'll notice I linked to Tedisco's website even though I can't stand him)

In the future, rather than interpreting my position, any read is more than welcome to leave a comment here asking me directly so they can quote rather than characterize.

Cheers.
